Rosario Bonaccorso was born on December 8, 1957 in Riposto, seaside town on the slopes of Etna, the magical volcano which seems to have transmitted the same explosive and compelling energy to this sicilian musician.

In 1960 the family moved to Imperia, Ligurian Coast, where RosarioBonaccorso resided until his talent led him to travel throughout Italy and then around the whole world. At seventeen, the double bass was not yet part of his life, he played the E-bass and led his own band  playing and singing songs from Genesis and Led Zeppelin as well as an original repertoire, meriting the prestigious  Italian award for emerging groups: Diapason d’Oro from Monzino.

At twenty he descovered the instrument of his life, the double bass. It was Eddie Gomez, and Scott La Faro, the exceptional double bass players of the Bill Evans Trio who inspired and enthralled him. He began to study the double bass by himself, quickly earning two scholarships and gaining experience with appreciated bands in north Italy.

Later on Rosario Bonaccorso discovered the sound of Ron Carter,  the bass player of Miles Davis, who was  his reference for years. He opened to Rosario Bonaccorso the way to the sound of classic jazz. After that he became interested in the styles of bassists like Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Charlie Haden, and others,  who have traced the evolution of the contemporary double bass language.

Then his musical maturity led him to develop his personal style, reinventing the message of the tradition of the great bass players of Afro-American music, which Rosario Bonaccorso revisits with contemporary, freshness and personality. It is important to point out his debut on the Italian national scene that took place in 1982 during the International Festival Ciak in Milano alongside stars of the jazz scene: Franco Ambrosetti, Daniel Humair and Dado Moroni.

Since 1997 he has been collaborating  for twelve years in the famous band of Stefano di Battista and  with the groups of Enrico Rava, with which he was in tour in Europe and many important countries like U.S.A., Japan, Canada, Argentina, Afrika..

Other important italian collaborations included  the project Milestones with Gino Paoli, Boltro, Rea, Gatto, and the group of Eric Legnini, of Roberto Gatto, of Dado Moroni, of Francesco Cafiso…

Rosario Bonaccorso is appreciated for his great communicative skills and his natural gifts, such as being highly creative, having knowledge of tradition,  for the charge of creative energy that he impresses on the rhythm section.  All these qualities  have made him one of the most requested double bass players.

Rosario Bonaccorso’s own signature style   is an original spirit of improvisation : the union between the expressive sound of his voice and the voice of the  instrument

Out of all these experiences finally Rosario Bonaccorso dedicated himself to the creation of his own albums and to the leadership of the own groups.   “Travel Notes”,  released in the year 2009,  is a  collection of 11 tracks, conceived and matured over many years spent playing around the world. Each piece is a photograph of a slice of life between stage and reality, a human journey and musical “autobiography” which tells a lot about the artist.  Starring Andy Gravish on trumpet, Andrea Pozza on piano and Nicola Angelucci on drums.

“In Cammino” is the last release and presents the new group featuring the trumpet player Fabrizio Bosso. Both CD’s  were released by the record Label  “Parco della Musica Records”  and distributed by  EGEA

Despite his many musical commitments, since eighteen years Rosario Bonaccorso has been organizer and artistic director of one of the most interesting music events on the Italian  scene – the Percfest of Laigueglia –   which is staged annually  in the month of June.

This event brings together the important Jazz Festival “Suoni, sogni e immagini nelle notti di mezza estate” and the Memorial Naco, percussion European event dedicated to the memory of Rosario Bonaccorso’s brother Naco, the unforgettable percussionist who died tragically in 1996. The Memorial Naco is characterized with 120 events in six days consisting of prestigious concerts, educational programs, seminars and international competition for creative percussionists. A cultural event of European stature which has renamed Laigueglia as the “European Capital of Percussion.”

Rosario Bonaccorso wird am 8. Dezember 1957 in Riposto, einer Kleinstand am Meer und Fuße des Ätna geboren. Das ist kein Zufall. Die explosive und mitreißende Energie des Musikers ist mit der des mystischen Vulkans durchaus vergleichbar.

Im Jahr 1960 übersiedelt die Familie Bonaccorso nach Imperia in Ligurien, wo Rosario im Alter von sechzehn Jahren beginnt Elektro-Bass zu spielen und seine ersten musikalischen Erfahrungen sammelt.

Während dieser Zeit erwacht in ihm der Wunsch Kontrabass zu spielen. Der Künstler beginnt sich für Jazz zu interessieren und verliebt sich in diese Musik. Dieser Moment entfacht sein starkes kreatives Potenzial und er wird von den Stilrichtungen mitgerissen, die die Entwicklung des zeitgenössischen Kontrabassspiels geprägt haben: Ron Carter, Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Charlie Haden..

Aber erst in seiner späteren musikalischen Reifephase entwickelt er seinen eigenen Stil: Auf den Spuren der größten Bassisten der afroamerikanischen Musik, findet Rosario Bonaccorso ein neuen künstlerischen Modus, der – gleichermaßen persönlich wie durchdringend – die Klassiker nicht bloß zitiert, sondern sie mit einer intellektuellen und leidenschaftlichen Begeisterung neu interpretiert.

Zudem blickt er auf dreißig Jahre musikalische Zusammenarbeit und Konzerterfahrung auf den Bühnen dieser Welt mit hunderten amerikanischen und europäischen Künstlern wie Elvin Jones, Benny Golson, Billy Cobham, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Stefano Bollani, Joe Lovano, Mark Turner, Gato Barbieri, James Moody, Lee Konitz, Steve Wilson, Ivan Lins, Dianne Reeves, Adrienne West, Clark Terry, Jon Faddis, Charles Tolliver, Franco Ambrosetti, Kenny Davern, Bob Wilber, Tony Scott, Slide Hampton, Kenny Barron, Jacky Terrason, Cedar Walton, George Cable, Ralph Sutton, Jimmy Cobb, Albert „Tootie“ Heath, Vernel Fournier, Naco, Aldo Romano, Dede Ceccarelli, Tommy Campbell, Sangoma Everett, Tullio de Piscopo, Luis Nash, Herlin Riley, Adam Nussbaum, Antonio Sanchez und vielen anderen zurück.

Von den zahllosen Kooperationen mit italienischen Künstlern sollen nur einige genannt werden; zu den wichtigsten zählen: von 1997 bis 2007 hat er regelmäßig mit dem Quartett von Stefano di Battista gearbeitet und über fünfhundert Konzerte in Europa gespielt, die ihn in Städte wie Paris, New York, Tokio, Montreal und Buenos Aires geführt haben; zehn Jahre lang hat er in den Formationen von Enrico Rava und im Projekt Un Incontro in Jazz mit Gino Paoli, Rava, Boltro, Rea, Gatto mitgewirkt; außerdem mit Projekte mit Lucio Dalla in Jazz und in den Formationen von Eric Legnini, Roberto Gatto, Dado Moroni und Francesco Cafiso.

Das sind nur einige der großen Namen mit denen Rosario Bonaccorso gearbeitet hat und noch immer arbeitet. Im Laufe dieser Kollaborationen sind über sechzig CDs für folgende Plattenfirmen entstanden: ECM, BLUE NOTE, LABEL BLEU, VERVE, UNIVERSAL und PMR. Er hat auf den wichtigsten Bühnen der Welt gespielt wie New York, Tokio, Paris, in der Scala in Mailand, im Auditorium della Musica in Rom und in der Staatsoper Wien.

Rosario Bonaccorso wird für seine offene und unmittelbare Musikalität genauso geschätzt wie für seine herausragende Kreativität und profunde Kenntnis der musikalischen Tradition. All diese Eigenschaften kann man in seiner Rhythmik erkennen, die ihn zu einem der gefragtesten Kontrabassisten werden ließ. Die Originalität seiner Improvisation kulminiert in der ausdrucksstarken und gefühlvollen Verbindung zwischen dem Klang seiner Stimme und dem seines Instrumentes.

Es war nur eine Frage der Zeit bis seine umfangreiche Erfahrung als „Sideman“ zur Umsetzung eigener künstlerischer Projekte führte mit denen Rosario Bonaccorso sich einen Namen als Leader und Komponist machte.

Mit seiner Formation Travel Notes Quartet hat er 2009 die CD „TRAVEL NOTES“ und im November 2011 die CD „IN CAMMINO“ veröffentlicht. Die beiden von den Kritikern hochgelobten Alben sind eine Sammlung von Stücken, die während der vielen Jahre, die er auf der ganzen Welt gespielt hat, entstanden und gereift sind.

Jede Komposition ist gleichsam ein Abbild der Zerrissenheit eines Lebens zwischen Bühne und Realität, eine persönliche und musikalische „Autobiografie“, die von den verschiedenen Facetten des Künstlers erzählt. Die beiden CDs wurden unter dem Label Parco della Musica Records veröffentlicht und von der EGEA vertrieben.

Im November 2013 erschien als Beilage zum Magazin Musica Jazz und in Koproduktion mit Jando-Music das neueste Werk des Kontrabassisten mit dem Titel „IN MEZZO C’E’ SOLO…IL MARE“

Rosario Bonaccorso est né le 8 Décembre 1957 à Ripon , ville balnéaire sur les pentes de l’Etna . C’est n’est pas un hasard . L’énergie explosive et en agitant le musicien est le même que le volcan magie .
En 1960 , la famille déménage à Bonaccorso Imperia , en Ligurie , où le Rosaire , à l’âge de seize ans, il a commencé à jouer de la basse électrique et de prendre les premiers pas dans la musique .
C’est à ce stade que mûrit le désir de jouer de la basse et l’artiste commence à être intéressé par le jazz , il tombe amoureux profondément . Le moment est intense et fertile , séduire les styles de ceux qui ont tracé l’évolution du langage contrebasse contemporain Ron Carter , Charles Mingus , Oscar Pettiford , Paul Chambers , Ray Brown , Charlie Haden ..
Mais c’est la prochaine maturité musicale qui l’a amené à développer son propre style : sur la base de la tradition des grands bassistes de la musique afro-américaine , Rosario Bonaccorso crée un nouveau mode artistique, personnel , omniprésent qui découle non seulement de revisiter les classiques, mais aussi sur leur interprétation par une verve intellectuelle et passionné en même temps .
